How to Effectively Use Your Commuting Time – ROCI

The commute to work… how many of us enjoy the drive? Have you ever said “I wish my drive to work was an hour longer?” Believe it or not, I have, and not just once!

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average commute to work in California takes 26.9 minutes. I’m sure that many would agree that majority of drivers listen to music or radio while driving to their destination. I was once one who filled my head with music that had no meaning to me nor did it impact my life positively, so I replaced it with something better that did, and in result I:

  • Became the most knowledgeable person in my field
  • Doubled my productivity
  • Enhanced my business acumen
  • Improved my self-esteem
  • Became more reputable to my clients

Anyone can duplicate the same strategy and get the same results.  The secret is Time Management & Self-Motivation!

I commute 33 miles to work (66 miles round-trip) which comes to a 40 minute drive ( 1 hour 20 minutes total).  For the past 2-3 years, I’ve continued to ask myself “What can I learn today that can impact my life and career?” I then take my smart phone, plug my answer in the a preferred search engine ( www.youtube.com , www.lawline.com , www.google.com , etc.)  and find the video I’m looking for, plug in my AUX Cord, and start my drive.

Some of the Topics I have studied during my commute include:

  • Starting & Planning a Business  (20+ Hours)     • Marketing Strategies (20+ Hours)
  • Business Law (20 + hours)     • Accounting & Finance (20 + Hours)
  • Creating a World Class Organization (10+ Hours )     • Managing Company Culture
  • Franchising     • Business Coaching     • Government Contracting
  • Spiritual Studies (20 + Hours)     • & Other topics of interests.

In business and marketing we learn about Return on Investment (ROI).  I call this Return On Commute Invested (ROCI).  I am investing Time + Gas + Car Mileage + Vehicle Wear & Tear, so maximizing my return on everything I invested in my commute is important to me. Does that sound like you?

I am certain that 95% of the people reading this post have a smart phone that has YouTube. I am also sure a good majority of us also have an auxiliary port in our vehicles. Use the tools you have to your advantage which will create a benefit in your success.
